Repetitive practice or training is intended to develop instinct. A subconscious discipline that one can draw on when put in a life or death situation. Traditional training, however, is in many cases, resulting in the opposite result.

In recent years, there has been rush to reevaluate the way those in law enforcement and military train for tactical situations.

Research has determined that past training techniques may actually be putting lives in danger rather than saving them. The primary danger stems from the use of traditional targets. Traditional targets are defined as single color silhouettes or single dot objectives. 

Funding for research was mandated after numerous reports of police shootings which resulted in officer hesitation. Debriefing indicated that time after time the officer hesitated because they were, as they say “Looking for the red dot or crosshairs.

If 90% of your training is spent on traditional targets, you may find that your instinctive discipline is to look for a crosshair or dot before firing.  This is a time when reason or thought are not likely and subconscious prevails. Those involved in these situations had hundreds of hours of training and practice yet at the very moment they needed to rely on their training it was the training that failed them.

As more organizations are becoming aware of this revealing research, they are having to rethink their approach to tactical training. This has resulted in a demand for lifelike targets. Targets that shoot back! 

Erskin Targets are life size, full color targets that result in an absolute appreciation for accuracy. In life or death situations, there is no room for hesitation. The target must be evaluated and responded to without indecision.

Indecision is also a major objective with our specialty targets.  By design we have purposely worked towards targets that result in a positive instinctive discipline.  It’s easy to engage a target that looks dangerous, but what about the innocent looking female, elderly grandmother or child.  Gender and age do not lesson the deadliness of a bullet.  If you have not trained yourself to respond equally to all threats regardless of appearance, your training is dangerously incomplete.

Inevitably, you will be drawn on one day and it will more than likely be a real threat; a person, not a black silhouette or circle target.  Make sure you’re your subconscious knows the difference.
